Please see email below from our Ride Coordinator, Liz Born, about the bike ride and volunteer opportunities at this year’s Washington Cherry Festival.
Chris Salvador

I would like to invite you to participate in a real hometown event that helps in our “grassroots” effort to promote bicycling in the Washington area. The Family Bike Ride is a leisurely 6-9 mile in-town ride that typically draws nearly 300 people, young and old. Families enjoy riding through Washington’s neighborhoods, diving into goodies and drinks at the 2-3 rest stops, and winning prizes awarded at the end.

Won’t you consider joining us in promoting bicycling as a safe and fun activity for families of all ages by volunteering to assist at a rest stop during the Family Bike Ride? The time commitment is minimal, with no more than 1.5 to 2 hours required, as waves of bicyclists descend on a rest stop, enjoy snacks and drinks, then are back on their bikes and pedaling away within minutes. This year, in particular, will be a golden opportunity to expose families to the wider world of bicycling in this area by promoting IVW and the many group rides they have to offer, and the upcoming No Baloney Ride, which takes place on the east side of the river this year.

If you would like to volunteer your time to this family-fun event, please contact me no later than Wednesday, May 15th . Also, feel free to contact me if you have questions. Thank you for considering this year’s 11th Annual Family Bike Ride event.

Trail Section Reopened for Use
The Rock Island Trail has been reopened to bike use from Alta to Dunlap as of May 1. The Trail is still closed to bike traffic from Dunlap to Toulon. As sections are repaired moving north, we will reopen them to biking. Between Wyoming and Toulon, there are several areas with such severe damage that the Trail may remain closed until restoration funds become available. Thank you for your support of the Trail, and thank you to all who have offered their help and services to restore the Trail.

Check back from time to time to continue to watch the progress on their website.
Illinois Bike Transportation Plan

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is pleased to announce the launch of an online web portal for the Illinois Bike Transportation Plan located at www.IllinoisBikePlan.com. The site provides a comprehensive overview of the plan and offers the public several opportunities to submit feedback, track plan progression, and collaborate with IDOT.

During the coming months, the site will be populated with additional resources and updated outreach information via the Timeline tool. The site will also host an interactive public engagement tool that will allow the public to submit bicycle policy and route recommendations. Finally, the site will provide helpful links to the public and instructions on ordering free Illinois bike maps.
