February, 2015

Hey fellow riders.

Sorry for the tardiness of this month’s note as I have been pre-occupied with some trip planning for the upcoming months. And yes, one of them involves a bad four letter word, s-n-o-w, in Colorado. I guess people either embrace it by picking up a winter sport (snow shoe-ing, cross country skiing, down hill skiing or winter hiking) or hate it (because of shoveling, difficult driving, clearing the satellite dish or not being able to ride outside). There are ways to combat the winter blues if you aren’t into any of the activities listed above. One is doing indoor spinning at the gym.

I find spin class have an advantage over doing it on your own in the basement as other people in the class does create motivation. If you do choose to workout on your own in your basement, you can stay motivated by picking up some training dvds with riding session goals hosted by a instructor offering encouragement. It has worked for Mike Brown, our club treasurer last winter and this winter. If spinning still sounds boring to you, perhaps try swimming as I know some of our members do on a weekly basis. Another workout that will help with your riding is R.I.P.P.E.D. It’s short for Resistance, Intervals, Plyometrics, Endurance & Diet. (https://www.rippedplanet.com/about/) I find it to be a fun workout since you only focus each exercise for a short time before moving on to the next set.

Bottom line is keep your active so when April rolls around. You will be in decent shape when you hit the pavement without missing a beat from last fall. Until next month, keep warm.
